H.C. Artmann was an Austrian poet, writer, and actor. He was born in Vienna, Austria, on 12 June 1921. He studied at the University of Vienna and the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Vienna. He was a member of the Vienna Group, a literary movement that sought to create a new form of expression in literature. Artmann wrote poetry, plays, and novels. His works often featured surrealist elements and were often humorous. He was also a translator, translating works from English, French, and Spanish into German. Artmann was a member of the Austrian PEN Club and the Austrian Writers' Association. He was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Literature in 1975. He died in Vienna on 4 June 2000.
