One of two girls who died in an apparent murder-suicide in Glendale, Arizona tweeted “goodbye” and that she felt “rejected” the night before she died.
A teacher and students at Independence High School identified the deceased as Mary Kieu and Dorothy Dutiel, 15-year-old sophomores. Police said each girl died of a single gunshot wound, and that a weapon and a suicide note were found on the scene. "They were found next to each other and the weapon was beside them," Glendale Police Officer Tracey Breeden said in a press conference. Police say they suspect it was a murder-suicide.
Dutiel had posted on social media in November that she was dating Kieu.
“And now we're Sophomores. Today is our two year mark, and I love her dearly. I'm yours, May Kieu,” Dutiel wrote on Instagram, adding a heart emoji at the end.
“I love you,” May replied.
On Thursday night, Dutiel tweeted that she felt “rejected af [as fuck]” and then simply said, “Goodbye.”
Kieu’s sister Phuong, a science teacher at the school, told AZ Central that she immediately feared her sister was one of the victims when she heard on the news that both girls were sophomores.
A school official came to get Phuong a few minutes later, saying, “We have to go upstairs.”
Police have not yet released the contents of the suicide note.
The sophomores appear to have been well-liked at school. In February 2015, May was named the freshman student of the month. She also played on the school’s varsity chess team.
Friends took to social media immediately to eulogize the young women.
“There was a very unfortunate tragedy at Independence High School today. R.I.P May and Dorthy,” MariaGuadalupe Berrelleza wrote on Facebook. “Dorthy and May were these very kind girls, and who made me feel welcomed when I was just a stranger and I'm sorry but I will miss seeing their smiling faces.”
“My heart sincerely goes out to the families,” she added.
“Rest easy dorthy, you were such a cool girl,” another classmate tweeted. “I didn't see this coming.”
“May was the sweetest, she was always full of joy, always happy, just hurts my heart to know that she's gone,” a friend recalled.
Others lashed out at speculation about who, exactly, was at fault for the double deaths.
"Everyone please go report positive truths," a boy wrote on Twitter. "I wish she knew how much I cares about her..... I could have helped her."
